Single Touch Payroll, in plain English

STP sends payroll information to the ATO each time you pay employees. The report includes salary and wages, PAYG withholding and super information. It does not move money to employees or super funds, and it does not replace the employer's responsibility to check payroll data before submitting it.

Read the ATO's Single Touch Payroll guidance or start with Gimbla's plain-English guide to what STP is and how it works.

Payroll features for the whole pay cycle

Pay runs and payslips

Set up employee earnings, deductions, PAYG withholding and super, process the pay run, then email or download detailed payslips. Employers remain responsible for correct inputs and for issuing payslips on time. See the guide to Australian payslip requirements.

Leave, timesheets and rostering

Track annual and personal leave balances, manage leave requests, record timesheets and organise staff rosters. Leave rules vary by employment type, so review each employee's entitlement before configuring balances.

Superannuation workflow

Calculate super within pay runs, maintain contribution records and use Gimbla's supported SuperStream payment workflow. STP reports super information, while the contribution itself is paid through the super payment process.

STP Phase 2 and finalisation

Gimbla supports STP Phase 2 reporting. The ATO Product Register lists Payroll Event 2020 for Gimbla, the service used to report the additional income, allowance, leave and employment details required under Phase 2.

At year end, use the finalisation workflow to review each employee's year-to-date values and submit a finalisation declaration. A successful finalisation tells the ATO that the year's STP data is complete and makes employee income statements tax ready. Finalisation is generally due by 14 July; review the ATO's current finalisation guidance for exceptions and changes.

Follow the step-by-step Gimbla STP finalisation guide or read the practical STP finalisation checklist.

What Gimbla does not decide for you

Payroll software helps calculate and report from the information you enter. It does not decide the correct award, classification, pay rate or employment arrangement. Gimbla offers configurable timesheet rules, but not complete award interpretation. Check Fair Work, your award or agreement, and professional advice where needed.

Set up Single Touch Payroll

  1. Start Gimbla Plus and add your employees.
  2. Check opening year-to-date values, pay items, PAYG withholding, super funds and leave balances.
  3. Register your Gimbla software ID with the ATO before the first STP submission.
  4. Process and review the pay run, then submit the STP pay event.
  5. Confirm the ATO response and correct rejected or inaccurate reports before the next deadline.
